Find here a free pattern to make this adorable elephant appliqué.

After the giraffe and the lions’ appliques, here is a crochet appliqué for an adorable elephant! You can use them to personalize a crochet blanket, a crochet bag or even a crochet hat!  I specially designed it because someone in my Facebook group asked me if I could make one, so here it is! Don’t forget to join the facebook group,  you can ask your questions, share your finished projects and I will regularly ask you what pattern you would like to see next (or you can even suggest something even if I am not asking!).

I hope you will enjoy and understand the pattern. If you have any questions, feel free to write to me. And I would love to see your work!

Pattern: How to crochet an Elephant applique?

The head

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
  • Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (30)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

The eyes should be between rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 3 st BUT I would suggest to maybe wait to sew the ears to the head before to fix them (you may want to fix them through the ears too depending on the design of your safety eyes).

With the black pearl cotton and your tapestry needle, make the eyebrows between Rounds 4 and 5, over 2 st.

The ears (make 2)

The left ear:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the blue yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [1 inc in all st]. (12)

Change for the grey yarn.

  • Round 4: [1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc in the next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next 2 st, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 2 hdc in the next 4 st, 1 sc in the next 6 st]. (30)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

The 4 dc you made in the last round are at the bottom of the ear and the 8 hdc are at the top.

The right ear:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the blue yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [1 inc in all st]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in the next st, 1 inc in the next st] x6. (18)

Change for the grey yarn.

  • Round 4: [1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc in the next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in the next 6 st, 2 hdc in the next 4 st, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 2 dc in the next 2 st, 1 sc in the next 4 st]. (30)
