Crochet Tiger Applique

 

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in: orange, black and white (or white, black and  light pink for the white tiger).
  • A very small amount of pearl cotton in black (for the mouth)
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm) for the eyes
  • 1 black safety eye (6 mm) for the nose
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

What did I use?

Light worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» in orange, white and black from Hobby Lobby (and Rico Creative cotton in white, light pink and black for the white tiger).





Pattern: How to crochet a Tiger applique?


The head

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the orange yarn (or white yarn for the white tiger)

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
  • Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (30)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

Put the eyes should be between rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 4 st.


The ears (make 2)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the orange yarn (or white yarn for the white tiger).

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

Sew the ears to the head over 2 st, spaced by 5 st.

With your tapestry needle and the black yarn, make 3 strips at the top of the head. The stripes should start from the last round and be over 2 rounds, each stripe spaced by 1 st on round 5 but closer on round 3 (see picture below). Then, make 3 smaller stripes on each side for the head (the first stripes being just below the ears).

The Muzzle

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn.

  • ch 5. (5)
  • Round 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 ch, 2 sc in the last ch. Now working on the other side of the chain: 1 sc in the next 3 ch. (8)
  • Round 2: 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st. (6)
  • sl st in the next st

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail to sew the muzzle to the head), fasten off.

Place a safety eye in the top center of the muzzle. If you want to make a mouth,  take your pearl cotton and your tapestry needle. Take the nose off, and make a mouth, then put the nose back on the muzzle. Place the muzzle on the head, fix the nose and with your tapestry needle, sew the muzzle to the head.

The body

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the orange yarn (or white yarn for the white tiger).

  • ch 7. (7)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 6 ch. (6)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 inc. (8)
  • Rows 3 to 9: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (8)
  • Row 10: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Rows 11 to 12: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
  • Row 13: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (5)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (5)
  • do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). (approx. 32 st)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail to sew the head on), fasten off.





The white belly (facultative)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn (not needed for the white tiger!).

  • ch 5. (5)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch. (4)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (4)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc. (6)
  • Rows 4 to 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
  • Row 6: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc. (4)
  • Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (4)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail to sew to the body), fasten off.


The back legs (make 2)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn (the pink yarn for the white tiger).

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 inc in all st]. (10)

Change for the orange yarn (white yarn for the white tiger):

  • Round 3: [1 sc in the next st, 1 inc in the next st] x5. (15)

We will now be working in row:

  • Row 4: 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (3)
  • Row 6-7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (3)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

With your tapestry needle, sew the back legs behind the body. You only want to see the feet from the front (see pictures below). Sew the white belly (if you made it) to the top of the body.


The front legs (make 2)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the orange yarn (white yarn for the white tiger).

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [1 inc in the next 3 st; 1 sc in the next 3 st]. (9)
  • Row 3:  1 sl st in the next st; ch1, turn; skip the sl st and make 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; make 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Rows 5-11: ch1, turn; make 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)

Cut the yarn, fasten off.

With the black yarn and the tapestry needle, make 4 stripes on each leg as shown below.

With your tapestry needle, sew the front legs to the front of the body (see picture below).

Sew the head over the body.
