Happy New Year!

Here is my first pattern of 2019!

I hope you like it!

This simple cupcake hat is part of a bigger design I’ll be releasing in the next week or two. I’m really excited about it!

UPDATE: It’s finished! Take a look at my UNICORN CUPCAKE BEANIE!

However, I thought this basic cupcake hat looked great on it’s own. It’s very versatile – make it in any size then decorate however you like!

My decoration ideas include:

  • add sprinkles (sew on some beads)
  • a little heart – I used this PATTERN or try these EMOJI HEARTS
  • a butterfly
  • flowers
  • a cherry on top
  • crochet a border into the stitches above the brim for a more frosted look
  • OR turn it into a UNICORN CUPCAKE BEANIE!

Cupcake Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

These simple cupcakes can be made in any size. The hat is worked in a spiral from the top down with the brim being added at the end. When you’ve finished your cupcake you can leave it plain or decorate it how ever you like. Sew some beads on for sprinkles, add a cherry on top or a motif like a heart or a butterfly.

You are welcome to sell the items you make with this pattern, but please give me, Krazy Kabbage, a mention in your sales listing and provide a link to my website www.krazykabbage.com.

I used Red Heart Super Saver (medium weight; 100% acrylic) in Minty, Orchid or Petal Pink with Buff for the brim.

You will need crochet hook sizes I/9 – 5.50mm and H/8 – 5.00mm

If you use a different yarn – Use the hook size recommended on your yarn for the top part of the hat. Go down a hook size for the brim.

This pattern uses US terminology.

Stitches and Techniques Used: Magic ring, half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st).

Size chart

The main photo shows 3 hats: Pink is 0-3 months size with 5 increase rounds and 4 rounds for length (see second chart). Purple is 6-12 months with 6 increase rounds and 5 rounds for length. The green hat is the next size up.

Follow the pattern to create the crown circle. Measure across the center of your circle to check you are making the size of hat you want.

How many rounds do you have? Find that number in the first column of the second chart and use the numbers in that row to complete the pattern. If your brim is too wide you can use the X Y Z values of the row above.

Top of hat

Follow the pattern below to make the crown circle for the hat. Stop increasing when the circle diameter measures the correct size (see chart). Then skip to the ‘Length’ instruction.

Use I/9 hook and pastel color yarn.

Start with a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: 8 hdc in ring. Do not join rounds (hat is worked in a spiral).

From this point forward, work all stitches into the 3rd loop to create spiral rib.

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each of next 8. (16)

Rnd 3: [hdc in next, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4: [hdc in each of next 2, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (32 hdc)

Rnd 5: [hdc in each of next 3, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (40 hdc)

Rnd 6: [hdc in each of next 4, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (48 hdc)

Rnd 7: [hdc in each of next 5, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (56 hdc)

Rnd 8: [hdc in each of next 6, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (64 hdc)

Rnd 9: [hdc in each of next 7, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (72 hdc)

Rnd 10: [hdc in each of next 8, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (80 hdc)

Length: hdc in each around. Repeat according to second chart.

Sc in next, sl st in next and fasten off.

Brim

Use H/8 hook and brown yarn.

Replace X, Y and Z with the numbers shown in the second chart.

Sl st to join in 3rd loop of a hdc along edge of hat. Chain X. Sc in 2nd ch from hk and each of next Y stitches.

*Working into the 3rd loop on the body of the hat, sl st in each of next 2 and turn. Skip sl sts. Working in the back loops only, sc in each of next X stitches. Ch 1 and turn. Continuing to work in the back loops only, skip first stitch, sc in each of next Z stitches. Repeat from * around hat.

When brim is complete, turn hat inside out and slip stitch through both thicknesses to close gap.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
