Crochet Bucket Bag Pattern

I wanted to make a small bucket bag that you can wear across your body.

These types of bags are perfect for the summer as you need free hands to shop, take photos or eat ice cream!

It’s also big enough for the essentials, like your phone, wallet, keys, sun cream etc but not too big that it becomes heavy.

*Don’t forget to pin and share*

The idea for this crochet bag design came at first because I wanted to make a drawstring backpack.

But then I thought it would be easier to wear and probably safer to have it as a crossbody bag.

The raffia was the perfect choice to make this in, but you could use any alternative fibre that you want!

Drawstring Bag

The bag is a simple design, you create a circle base first then continue to single crochet.

Once the bag reaches the height you want, you stop and weave through a cord, which can be pulled together to close the bag.

I bought a metre length of brown suede, that has a slight sheen on it for this.

I also added a raffia tassel with beads and bits I found in a local craft store.

The drawstring pulls the top of the bag closed and I tied it into a bow.

This makes it really easy to open and close when needed.

Alternatively, you could knot the ends or weave through two lengths of cord, pulling through to each end, so that you can pull the drawstrings closed in a more traditional way.

Raffia

I used raffia from King Cole in a natural colour.

However, you can use raffia alternatives as there are many around, like Ra Ra Raffia from Wool and the Gang.

There are also other gorgeous colour choices from King Cole Raffia, including browns, greens and reds.

Finishing

Add the bag clips and chain to each side of the bag, the raffia is strong, so they will not pull the side of the bag out of shape.

You may need to use pliers to open the clasp on the key ring clip to attach the bag chain.

You can also add a bag charm - if you wish, made from beads and a raffia tassel.

You can see how to make a tassel in this tutorial here.
